This week we had the opportunity to sit down with Francisco Martin, our Vice President Operations, IT and Engineering for the Americas, EMEA and South Asia, who is based in Barcelona, Spain.
Could you tell us a little bit about your background?
“I actually have several backgrounds, but they are all related to technology! Over the past 15 years, I have worked with both computers and communications in consulting, the pharmaceutical industry, banking and hospitality. I joined interTouch in January 2020, right before the global Covid-19 pandemic, and what a year it has been.”
What is the best part of working at interTouch?
“The challenges I’m facing, but in a positive way. I am someone that likes to learn, get exposure, take risks and use common sense, and interTouch offers it all. What I really enjoy is the freedom to take the necessary steps and decisions to continually improve the business. In other companies – even in management roles- I couldn’t work in the same way and the environment was more restrictive. interTouch is a company that truly trusts its employees.”
What are the most exciting parts of your role?
“Managing a very high-quality team. I have never had the chance to manage a team as skilled as this one. This makes a big difference, and is very exciting, because you can challenge your employees knowing they will contribute effectively to this challenge and overcome whatever comes their way.”
What makes interTouch such a great place to work?
“Definitely the confidence, trust and the empowerment we have at interTouch across all levels of the organisation. This is fantastic and makes a huge difference to the work environment.”
What are your favourite technology gadgets?
“This has to be my smartphone, but mostly for personal use. At work we primarily use digital collaboration tools to communicate with each other.”
What technology do you expect to see in hotels when you travel?
“Touchless technology such as voice assistants, App’s for handling and controlling the TV, online room service ordering, and mobile room keys to reduce reception queues.”
Once we can all travel again, what destinations are on your bucket list to visit?
“North America because I have never been there. At interTouch I have several American peers, so I am keen to travel there to meet them. On the top of my list are Miami, New York, Washington and San Francisco.
Do you have a role model in business?
“Yes, fortunately I do. It is my current manager, Michael Vargosko. He is one of the key reasons I joined interTouch; to have the possibility to have him as a mentor. It is great to have someone that can guide, challenge and support you, and most importantly, trusts you.”
What is your favourite business mantra?
“I actually have three, and people that know me well know these all ring true for me:
– If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together
– Look at the mirror, this is your major competitor
– Everything is technically impossible until it gets done”
What is your personal learning from the Covid-19 pandemic?
“That nothing is more important than health. Losing my father in December 2020 was the most critical learning for me. Family time matters and you never know what will happen – we have seen this with the pandemic – so make sure to stay close to the people you love.”
What is your superpower?
“Energy. I can work for hours and never feel tired. Honestly sometimes I don’t even know how I’m able to do that!”
What historical figure would you have liked to be?
“Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein, I would have loved to have had the opportunity to influence the world and make history in the same way they did.”
What is the most useful fact you know?
“The first email was sent by Ray Tomlinson to himself in 1971 with the computer next to him.”
